San Sano, Gaiole in Chianti

The small village of San Sano, nestled among the woods that surround the ancient municipality of Gaiole di Chianti, is a discreet elitist refuge. Different versions on its origins exist but all agree that it was a land sought after and contested between Florence and Siena.

The birth of San Sano, admirable example of vernacular architecture, can be dated to between the thirteenth and the fourteenth century, when a number of fragile armistices between the two contending cities allow local proprietors to enjoy periods of more or less stable government. Following centuries of wars, the castles and strongholds become farm residences and part of the secular oak and chestnut woods leave room to ancient purgulae perfect for vine cultivation.
