Different versions on its origins exist but all agree that it was a land sought after and contested between Florence and Siena.<\/p>\n<p>The birth of San Sano, admirable example of vernacular architecture, can be dated to between the thirteenth and the fourteenth century, when a number of fragile armistices between the two contending cities allow local proprietors to enjoy periods of more or less stable government.
