The Castelvecchio castle was an important fort during the medieval period. It had the advantage of a natural line of defence provided by two small rivers,Botro di Castelvecchio and the Botro della Libaia, both tributaries of the larger river Elsa.<\/p>\n
The castle is powerful and compact in its size with very little decoration – one square compound built in red bricks, one of the most prominent examples of Gothic architecture of the age, with imposing M-shaped merlons running along the castle and bridge walls. It has seven towers, a superelevated keep\u00a0with four main buildings inside. The castle is surrounded by a ditch, now dry, which was once filled with waters from the nearby Adige.<\/p>\n
The main street of the village<\/strong>, dotted with ancient ruins, comes out on the square where now stands the church of San Frediano<\/strong>: a little hidden gem of Romanesque architecture<\/strong>, with a rectangular plan and semicircular apse so perfect that your hand touch will not perceive the discontinuity between one stone and another.
