The first stop on any tour of the area would have to be Livorno<\/b><\/a>, one of the most important ports in Italy and home to the Italian\u00a0Naval Academy.
\nThe city still preserves the charm and layout conferred upon it by the Medicis in the 16th and 17th Centuries: the pentagonal defensive wall surrounded by navigable moats, the distinctively red-colored fortifications such as the Old Fortress\u00a0or Fortezza Vecchia<\/i><\/strong>, work of Antonio da Sangallo; the Cathedral<\/b> and the Via Grande<\/b> portico.
\nThe Venezia Nuova<\/strong> district is also rather\u00a0charming, built in the 17th Century on the model of the original lagoon city; it includes a dense network of canals with bridges and high buildings, and is home to many fashionable bars and typical restaurants.<\/p>\n

The Church of Santa Caterina<\/b> is of particular artistic importance, while the Sanctuary dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie<\/b>, located not far from Livorno\u00a0in the village of Montenero,\u00a0is of great religious significance.
\nIn terms of outstanding architecture, the Cisternone<\/b> and the Cisternino<\/b> stand out; these two large reservoirs in the Neoclassical style, by\u00a0architect Poccianti, are nowadays used as venues for cultural events. \u00a0Do not miss the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum<\/b>, located in the beautiful Villa Mimbelli<\/b>, which houses a magnificent collection of Tuscan paintings realized between the 19th and 20th Centuries, and\u00a0more\u00a0works by Fattori.<\/p>\n

Obviously no trip to Livorno is complete without Terrazza Mascagn<\/strong>i, \u00a0a very special\u00a0terrace made with stone balustrades that sweeps gracefully along the seafront in a dramatic chessboard flurry of black-and-white checks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
