It\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Fabbriche di Careggine<\/strong>,\u00a0a Garfagnana town that was filled with water in 1946 to build <strong>Lake<\/strong> <strong>Vagli<\/strong>,\u00a0an artificial basin owned by Enel and forming part of a dam, used for hydroelectric purposes and as a water reserve for the entire area in case of fire.\u00a0Fabbriche di Careggine\u2019s residents\u00a0had to move to a\u00a0new town, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viverelatoscana.it\/en\/ghost-town-of-vagli\/\"><strong>Vagli di Sotto<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0on the promontory of the lake, and the twelfth century town vanished forever.\u00a0Today the ghost town emerges from underwater\u00a0only when the dam is drained for maintenance work. So far, this has only happened four times: in 1958, 1974, 1983 and 1994. There have just been these four occasions to see\u00a0Fabbriche di Carreggine\u00a0emerge, with its stone houses still standing, along with its cemetery, bridge, and the <strong>Church of San Teodoro,<\/strong>\u00a0whose belltower is now in ruins.
