Mulino delle Pile

A few kilometers far away from the Abbey of San Galgano and from the village of Chiusdino, there is the Mulino delle Pile, a mill within a farm extended for 12 hectares in the Natural Park of Val di Merse, a magical place, of which the abbey is the highest expression. Testimonial of the television advertising of Mulino Bianco, the Mulino delle Pile is now a cozy farmhouse with a traditional Tuscan restaurant and a great hotel service. The dishes served at the restaurant “La Vecchia Macina” reflect the authenticity of the traditional Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant has an interior room at the ground floor of the mill and an outdoor terrace.

Near the  Mulino delle Pile, there is the Abbey of Saint Galgano whic  was a Cistercian Monastery found in the valley of the river Merse between the towns of Chiusdino and Monticiano, Presently, the roofless walls of the Gothic style 13th-century Abbey church still stand. Nearby are the chapel or Eremo or Rotonda di Montesiepi (1185), the tomb of Saint Galgano and the purported site of his death in 1181, the sword said to have been planted in the ground by Galgano and a chapel with frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
